High Pressure Sales Calls Warning - Levens Area

Alert message sent 02/10/2018 16:41:00

Information sent on behalf of Cumbria County Council

Cumbria Trading Standards have received information regarding a potential scam company operating in Cumbria following a cold call to a resident in the Levens area.  The resident was contacted over the telephone and told by a representative of the company that they are raising awareness in relation to safety in the home and will be visiting the area in the next few days offering a new device for a cost of £299.

Previous reports of this nature suggest that these devices are sold based on the information that they are directly linked to the Police, Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service and the Ambulance Service.  Private security firms do not link into the emergency services.

We would always advise people who are cold called by companies offering to sell goods or services to be on their guard and follow the advice below:-

  • Never make an appointment for someone to visit your home without discussing it with your family or someone you trust first.
  • If you do make an appointment someone should always be with you - do not let them into your home if you are alone.
  • High pressure selling is illegal under Consumer Protection legislation and no one should feel pressured to sign up to a contract or buy anything on the spot.  Reputable companies will allow you time to consider all the options and obtain further quotes.
  • If you are in any doubt say “no thank you” and look out for more vulnerable relatives or neighbours.

If you do experience high pressure selling or have any concerns about cold callers operating in your area please contact Trading Standards via the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 03454 040506 or the Police on 101.

To reduce the number of unsolicited telephone calls you receive you can register with the Telephone Preference Service which restricts the supply of your telephone number to organisations who may ring you with offers and information you do not wish to receive. To register for free, visit www.tpsonline.org.uk or telephone 0345 070 0707.
