Information sent on behalf of Cumbria County Council

Cumbria Trading Standards have received reports from residents who have been cold called by a company claiming to get you a ‘council tax rebate’. The company have asked the residents for £150 and promised a rebate of thousands, however there is no guarantee of success, and they are providing a service consumers can get do themselves via the Valuation Office Agency - https://www.gov.uk/topic/local-government/council-tax or other FREE to use websites such as - https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/reclaim/council-tax-bands-change/

If you receive a call of this nature or similar please do not engage with them or send them any money.

Cumbria Trading Standards and Cumbria Police advice is simple; do not hand over any money or personal information to any cold callers whether on the telephone or on the doorstep. Often these companies prey on the most vulnerable so please look after those in your community.

Consumers can register their details with the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) to reduce the number of unsolicited sales and marketing calls.  More details can be found at www.tpsonline.org.uk or contact the TPS registration line on 0345 070 0707.

If you or someone you know has been targeted in this or a similar manner, please contact Trading Standards via the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 03454 04 05 06 or Cumbria Police 101.
