Warning of Rainfall for Cumbria from Thursday 8th to Monday 12th August

Alert message sent 08/08/2019 14:31:00

Information sent on behalf of The Environment Agency

The Met Office have advised that we will experience a very unsettled period from today until Monday 12th August as widespread rain moves in along with possible thunderstorm conditions.

Whilst river levels are currently low across the County, there is the potential for some river levels to rise over the coming days.  Based on our current predictions river levels may reach Flood Alert thresholds.  This means flooding is possible to low lying land and roads.   Should we experience thunderstorms during this period, this will increase the risk of flooding of smaller rivers and watercourses as well as bringing increased risk from surface water.

We are undertaking checks of all of our grids, clearing them where necessary to reduce any risk of blockages during this period.

Be flood ready. It is important that you are prepared for flooding and we encourage you to take 3 simple steps:-
  • Sign up to Flood Warning Service to receive free flood warnings
  • Know what to do when a flood warning is issued.  We encourage you have a personal flood plan for you and your family
  • Keep an eye on the situation.  You can view at 5 day weather forecast and monitor river levels online at https://flood-warning-information.service.gov.uk/ and www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/

Further information is available on our website www.gov.uk/flood or by ringing Floodline on 0345 988 1188.  Advice and information on other sources of flooding can be found at www.thefloodhub.co.uk
