Important Scam Alert

Alert message sent 31/08/2021 21:40:00

Information sent on behalf of Cumbria Neighbourhood Watch

Many thanks to one of our members for provided the following information about a scam involving animal sales by letter, something completely different to what we have experienced previously.

I have today received a letter from a lady about a puppy sale scam. It has been sent to a number of houses in my area. The scammers seem to be using an address here, however, the letter was posted in Aberdeen but gives no address’

I know you can’t do anything if people use your address on line but some people may be upset to get this kind of communication.

My advice is that this should be reported to www.actionfraud.police.uk/reporting

Please reminder that in order to avoid scams you need to know how to protect yourself.

Some good advice in general to keep you safe:
  • Avoid any unexpected contact. Any phone calls, letters, emails or people knocking on your door should be ignored.
  • Never give out personal information. This can be used to steal your identity and access accounts.
  • Keep operating system and virus protection software up-to-date. Don’t ignore updates as these can often include patches to protect against new kinds of scams, viruses and ransomware. This goes for mobile devices as well.
  • Make sure all accounts have a strong password. Don’t use the same password for multiple accounts and change them regularly.
  • Don’t make any advanced payments until you are sure the company you are dealing with is legitimate.
Hope this helps.
Kind regards
Joe Murray QPM
